Oscar De La Renta Biography, Wikipedia, Age, Wife, Education, Parents, Death, Oscar de la Renta was a Dominican fashion designer. He was born Oscar Aristides Renta Fiallo. He was professionally known as Oscar de la Renta. He was trained by Antonio Del Castillo and Cristobal Balenciaga. He became popular all over the world in the 1960s as one of the couturiers who outfitted Jacqueline Kennedy.

Oscar worked for Balmain and Lanvin. He had an eponymous fashion house, which has boutiques internationally including Madison Avenue in New York and Harrods in London.

Early Life Of Oscar De La Renta Wikipedia

He was the only boy in his family and the youngest of 7 kids. He was born on 22 July 1932 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was born to a Dominican mother of distant Portuguese background, Carmen Maria Antonia Fiallo, and a father named Puerto Rican.

His father was an owner of an insurance firm. He was brought up Catholic in a caring family. He suffered from huge trauma when his mother died from problems of multiple sclerosis. At that time, he was 18 years old.

De la Renta went to study painting in Spain at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid at the age of 18. He drew clothes for fashion houses and newspapers to earn extra money. When Francesca Lodge saw some of his dress sketches, she commissioned Oscar to design a gown for her daughter.

The dress designed by him appeared on the cover of Life magazine that fall. Moreover, Oscar de la Renta quickly became willing in the world of fashion design. He started sketching for leading Spanish fashion houses. After some time, he led an apprenticeship with the most renowned couturier in Spain, Cristobal Balenciaga.

Oscar de la Renta considered Cristobal Balenciaga his mentor. In the year 1961, he left Spain to join Antonio Del Castillo as a dressmaking assistant at Lanvin in Paris.

Oscar De La Renta Education/Career 

In the year 1963, he moved to the United States of America willing to emphasize ready-to-wear. Though, Diana Vreeland advised him to return to haute dressmaking, when in New York. He started designing for a custom-made clothing line of Elizabeth Arden where he got more public recognition.

When he gained years of experience from some of the greatest couturiers in the world, he opened his own house in the year 1965. He combined his Latin American passion for color with his couture-trained eye for embellishments and uxorious fabrics. This is how his label got immediate success with both media and retailers.

From 1993 to 2002, he designed the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain, which gave him the tag of the first Dominican to design for a French couture house. His label diversified into bridal wear in 2006. His designs got recognition in the whole world because they have been worn by a huge group of different celebrities and women.

His brand saw international wholesale growth starting in 2003 from 5 to 75 locations. His designs are available online, with selected wholesale partners all over the world, and in his own retail stores. In 2014, the George W. Bush Presidential Center hosted an exhibition named Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style.

He launched his fragrance titled OSCAR followed by a line of accessories and homewares in 2001 and 2002 respectively. This venture included 100 home furnishings for Century Furniture, which features upholstered chairs, dining tables, and couches. In the year 2004, Oscar de la Renta added a line of clothing with a less expensive feature named O Oscar.

In 2006, he designed a boutique hotel at Puntacana Resort and Club Tortuga Bay, which is now a part of the luxury hotel collection, The Leading Hotels of the World.

Oscar de la Renta built an orphanage and school for Romanian orphaned kids named La Casa del Nino.

Oscar De La Renta Awards 

He received the award of the Coty American Fashion Critic in 1967 and 1968. After 5 years, he earned a place in the Coty Hall of Fame. In addition, for the next 3 years, he served as President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

When he was in office, De la Renta created the CFDA Awards. He got the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 1990. In 1993, he was appointed head couturier at Pierre Balmain in Paris.

Oscar De La Renta Death

He died at 82 on October 20, 2014, due to cancer at his home in Kent, Connecticut.
