When she was a young child, Jami Porter Lara shifted to Albuquerque in New Mexico in 1980. Lara attended the University of New Mexico and in this university, she got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2013.

She also learned a variety of pottery techniques from Hector Gallegos and Graciela in the Village of Mata Ortiz, which is located in the Northern State of Chihuahua, Mexico. In Mata Ortiz, a Pueblo pottery restoration occurred in the 1970s.

In this restoration, people began producing ceramic pots that bore artistic relation to ancient artifacts and potsherds discovered in that vicinity, from the Mimbres cultures and Casas Grandes. People locally sourced their materials and found how to make ceramic vessels with the help of the 2000 year old techniques.

Jami Porter Lara said that those people showed us how to immerse the clay and filter it and then allow it to dry. She also explained how those people taught them to build ceramic pots out of coils and how to polish them with a stone.
