Betty G Miller was deaf and was born to deaf parents Gladys Hedrick and Ralph Reese Miller Sr. Betty G. Miller also had two brothers but they were normal and were able to hear. She used to speak ASL- American Sign Language with her brothers.

However, Betty learned English and speech from her family members who were able to speak. Her parents did not know about her deformity until she reached kindergarten. This news was heartbreaking for the entire family.

She had parents who were hard of hearing and had already suffered a lot. They did not want this for their beloved daughter.  They were determined to provide her best.

Betty G Miller Education

Betty G. Miller was first sent to an oral school which is located in Chicago called Bell School.  Her father did not send her to the deaf residential school present in Illinois which was his own school. She was sent to oral school and later went to a regular school where she joined students who were able to hear.

She attended the school along with speech lessons in another school which required traveling in a taxi and the fare was paid by the school district every day.  In the year 1953, she attended Gallaudet College as a freshman.

In the university, she entered a singer’s community where she fined people of her age.  This was a big cultural shock for her as Betty used to talk in sign language which she used to communicate with her parents and their generation. Betty G. Miller was able to talk and was also efficient in lip-reading.

Betty G. Miller had a huge transformation in her college. Her journey from a deaf girl to a proud rebel was amazing. She was way ahead of other students in embracing signs as a true natural language and deafness as a difference, not a handicap.

In the year 1976, she earned her Doctorate of Education degree in art at Pennsylvania State University. She was also having specialization working with heard of hearing patients because she was a certified alcohol and drug counselor.

Betty G Miller Artist’s Statement

“Much of my work depicts the Deaf experience expressed in the most appropriate form of communication: visual art.  I present both the suppression, and the beauty of Deaf Culture and American Sign Language as I see it; in the past, and the present.

I hope this work, and the understanding that may arise from this visual expression, will help bridge the gap between the Deaf world, and the hearing world.”
