When his parents got separated, he moved to Houston where he resided with his mother, grandmother, and younger brother in the South Acres neighborhood.
Quanell X attended Worthing High School in the South Acres neighborhood, where he completed his high school education. But due to lack of employment, Quanell X ended up selling drugs to meet his survival needs.

In September 1990, he decided to join the Nation of Islam and turned out to be a student of Farrakhan after listening to Louis Farrakhan at Sam Houston Coliseum. He would later be more commonly known as Quanell X, which is his pseudonym.
