Nathon Eldon Tanner Early Life
Nathan was born on 9th May 1898 in Salt Lake City, Utah where he grew up with his family. He had a father Nathan William Tanner and his mother Sarah Edna Brown Tanner. Nathan had seven younger siblings which means he had many friends and a huge family and had an amazing childhood.
The whole family emigrated to Canada and then owned farmsteads in Aetna, which is in the south of Cardston, Alberta and this is the place where he actually grew up with his family playing on the farm. He went to grade school at first and then joined the Knight Academy which is in Raymond for his high schooling.
He also got postsecondary education at Calgary Normal School. There is no further education that he had. He started working soon and he first started working in the grocery store and then a butcher shop. Then later in the year 1919, he started teaching at a small school called Hill Spring. This is the place where he found his love and married her.
Nathon Eldon Tanner‘s spouse’s name is Sara Isabelle Merrill and the couple had five daughters together. When Nathon Eldon Tanner was teaching he started with a small general store which later was turned into a local post office. This was to supplement his income and take care of his family.
His general store was doing well and this is why he left his teaching job and started running his store full-time. Then he also taught at the Cardston where he was first a teacher and then became the school principal. Then he turned to politics and started as the councilor at the Cardston Town Council.

Tanner planned to run the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the year 1935 for the first time in the general election. He ran a candidate for Social Credit in the district election of Cardston and was successful in defeating MLA George Stringam.
Tanner had no experience in politics despite the fact he was selected to be the speaker of the Alberat Legislature when the first 8th Alberta Legislative Assembly’s first session started. He remained a speaker until 1937 starting when he was appointed as the minister of lands and mines by William Aberhart.
Then Nathon Eldon Tanner was a legislator for about 16 years. In the 1940 general election, Tanner defeated SH Nelson who was an independent candidate In 1944 he won a 3-way race and In 1948 Alberta Tanner easily won a two way race over Briant Stringam who was a Liberal candidate
In 1949 Tanner’s ministerial portfolio was changed by Ernest Manning from lands and mines to lands and forests. Then he was appointed as Minister of Mines and Minerals and this position was in his portfolio until he got retired in the year 1952.

In the year 1960, Tanner was called by a full time LDS Church as an Assistant to the Quorum of the 12 Apostles. Tanner had experience in church leadership and had served as a bishop, stake president, and branch president in Canada, in the church he preferred to be called “N Eldon Tanner .” in 1962 George Q Morris died when the vacancy was vacant and Tanner was the one to fill it. Tanner also won many awards for his work and jobs.
Nathon Eldon Tanner’s death
Tanner’s health started getting bad but he remained the first counselor till his death on 27th November 1982. Tanner died at the age of 82 after which no one was added to the first presidency.
