The Early Life and Career of Maus Art Spiegelman

He shifted to the USA with his parents in the year 1951. His family initially settled in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and after that relocated to Queens, New York. He was motivated by the clever artwork and seditious humor of Mad Magazine.

This is why Art Spiegelman studied cartooning. At Russell Sage Junior High School, he was an honors student and developed the Mad-inspired fanzine Blasé. He got money from his drawing until he reached high school and he sold artwork to the original Long Island Press and many other outlets.

In his teenage, he started attending Manhattan’s High School of Art and Design. He met Woody Gelman (the art director of Topps Chewing Gum Company). Woody encouraged him to apply to Topps after completing his high school studies. When he was 15 years old, he got paid for his work from a Rego Park Newspaper.

When he completed his graduation in 1965, his parents insisted he pursues the financial security of a career like dentistry. As he was interested in arts, this is why he enrolled at Harpur College to learn art and philosophy.

When he was studying in college, he started a freelance job at Topps, which gave him an income for the next 2 decades. He also worked as a staff cartoonist for the college newspaper and also edited a college humor magazine.

When he was 18 years old, he was in his summer internship. At that time, Topps hired Art Spiegelman for Gelman’s Product Development Department in the position of a creative consultant, where he made trading cards and other related products including the Wacky Packages series of parodic trading cards.

He started selling self-published underground commix on street corners in the year 1966. Interestingly, Art Spiegelman had cartoons published in underground publications including The East Village Other. He then traveled to San Francisco for a few months in 1967.

In the late winter of 1968, he dealt with a brief but deep nervous breakdown that made him cut out from his university studies for a short time. He told that at that time he was under LSD with great frequency.

Spiegelman was sent to a Binghamton State Mental Hospital for a month and shortly after he left it, his mother committed suicide because of the death of her only surviving brother.

He left college without getting a degree. In the early 1970s, he contributed to the successful comics underground. Art Spiegelman published two strips in 1972 that illustrated a break from his past work.

Maus (the first one) was a 3-page story that appeared in cartoonist Justin Green’s Funny Animals anthology. Prisoner on the Hell Planet (the second one) was a challenge to understand his mother’s suicide via panels that induced the bold intensity of German Expressionist woodcuts. In fact, these strips were gathered in Breakdowns in 1977 with other works.

In 1980, Art Spiegelman cofounded Raw (an underground comic and graphics anthology) with his wife (Francoise Mouly). Raw featured strips by artists of Europe and also previewed Art Spiegelman’s own work. Raw was known as the leading avant-garde commix journal of its era.

Art Spiegelman depicts himself as the adult Artie Spiegelman, who is trying to understand and rebuild his parents’ past while dealing with the legacy of his mother’s death, his own sense of guilt, and his aging, and often difficult father.

The fictional quality of Maus and Raw pushed Comix into the mainstream. After their success, Art Spiegelman started working as an illustrator at New York Times, a Playboy cartoonist, a writer, and a staff artist for The New Yorker.

His other notable works include Breakdowns, Maus, and Garbage Pail Kids.
