The Early Life of Lottie Moon Wikipedia
She was born on December 12, 1840, in Albemarle County, Virginia to staunch Baptist parents named Edward Harris and Anna Maria Barclay. She was brought up in a big and wealthy family. She grew up as a child of the old South. She was 4th in a family of 5 girls and 2 boys. She was only 13 years old when her father died in a riverboat accident.
Education was everything to her and at the age of 14, she went to school at the Baptist-affiliated Virginia Female Seminary, a high school. She also attended Albemarle Female Institute in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Lottie Moon got one of the first Master of Arts degrees in the year 1961, which was awarded to a woman by a southern institution. The most interesting thing about Lottie Moon is that she learned multiple languages such as Greek, Latin, French, and Italian. Later, she would be proficient in Chinese.
Lottie Moon Spiritual Awakening
She was an outspoken and spirited girl. She was indifferent to her Christian childhood until her early teens. Lottie Moon experienced a spiritual awakening while attending revival meetings on the college campus. She helped her mother handle the family estate throughout the war.
After that, Lottie started a teaching career. She used to reach female academies including Danville (Kentucky). She and Anna Safford (her friend) started Cartersville Female High School in the year 1871. She also joined the First Baptist Church and ministered to the underprivileged families of Bartow County, Georgia.
Her older sister Orianna started serving as a Confederate Army doctor during the American Civil War. To the family’s surprise, Edmonia (her younger sister) accepted a call to stay in North China as the first single woman Baptist minister in the year 1872.
She soon felt called to follow Edmonia to China. She was officially appointed as a minister to China by Foreign Mission Board at the age of 32.
Ministry work in China
She joined her sister at the North China Mission Station in Dengzhou’s treaty port in Shandong. This is how Lottie Moon started her ministry by teaching in a boy’s school. She discovered her passion which is direct evangelism when she accompanied some of the seasoned ministry wives on ‘country visits’ to remote villages.
During her missionary work, Lottie Moon felt chained down and came to see her as part of the burdened class- single woman missionaries. Moon’s writings were an appeal on behalf of all those who were dealing with similar situations in their missionaries.
In the year 1885, she gave up teaching and shifted to the center to evangelize full-time in the regions of Hwangshien and Pingtu. She continued a prolific writing campaign. This is how her articles and letters described the life of a ministry and pleaded the ‘desperate need’ for more ministries.
But the poorly funded board could not give. She motivated Baptist women to arrange mission societies in the local churches to assist in supporting extra ministry candidates and also to consider coming themselves. She worked to promote missions and gather funds to support missions.
She was instrumental in the invention of The Woman’s Missionary Union, which was an auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention in the year 1888. In 1892, she took a much-needed leave in the USA and did so again in the year 1902.

She was in love and got engaged to someone who never understood her missionary work. This is why Moon left him and never married. Lottie dedicated her whole body, soul, and life to the service of God. She died on December 24, 1912.
