She was born on August 21, 1959, in Manila, Philippines. She was born to Manuel L. Araneta Jr., who was a Filipino basketball Olympian. Both of her parents belonged to Spanish descent and had prominent political backgrounds. She completed her studies at the Ateneo de Manila University.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1981. In 1985, she also did a Bachelor of Laws at the same university. After graduating from the university, she joined New York University to complete her post-graduate courses in criminal procedure.
