She was born Kitty Linn O’Neil on March 24, 1946, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her father (John O’Neil) was an officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces, who had served as an oil wildcatter. Her father died in an airplane crash when she was a child.

Her mother (Patsy Compton O’Neil) self-identified as being of Cherokee descent. She had to deal with many childhood diseases, which affected her hearing ability when she was 5 months old. When she turned two, her deafness became deceptive.

At that time, her mother taught her speech and lip-reading. Eventually, Kitty O’Neil became a speech therapist and co-founder of a school for students dealing with hearing issues in Wichita Falls, Texas. 

When she was a teenager, she turned out to be a competitive 10 m platform diver and 3 m springboard diver, which let her win Amateur Athletic Union diving championships. Starting in 1964, she trained with diving coach Sammy Lee.

She broke her wrist and constricted spinal meningitis before the trials for the 1964 Olympics. It damaged her walking ability and ended her argument for a position on the Olympic diving team.

Kitty O’Neil competed in the 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle swimming at the 1965 Summer Deaflympics. Once she recovered from meningitis, Kitty lost her interest in diving and started following scuba diving, water skiing, skydiving, and hang gliding. In her late 30s, Kitty O’Neil underwent two cancer treatments.

Kitty O’Neil was first married to Ronald ‘Duffy’ Hambleton (a bank executive before becoming a stunt performer) in the late 1970s. The couple eventually divorced. After that, she remarried, but the second marriage also ended in divorce. Kitty had two children with her first husband.  

Kitty O’Neil Professional Career

On 6 December 1976, she set the land-speed record for women drivers. Kitty piloted a hydrogen peroxide-powered 3-wheeled rocket car made by Bill Fedrick known as the ‘SMI Motivator.’

Her runs reportedly utilized 60 percent of the available thrust and she estimated that she could have surpassed 700 miles per hour with full power.

She had taken up racing on land and water, competing in the Mint 400 and Baja 500. In the mid-1970s, she started stunt work, training with Hambleton, Needham, and Dar Robinson.

In 1977, she piloted a hydrogen peroxide-powered rocket dragster built by Ky Michaelson. In 1979, her experiences served as the foundation for a biographical movie titled Silent Victory: The Kitty O’Neil Story.

She stepped away from speed and stunt work in 1982 after stunt colleagues were murdered while performing. Kitty O’Neil shifted to Minneapolis with Michaelson and finally moved to Eureka, South Dakota, with Raymond Wald.

At the time of retirement, she had set 22 speed records on water and land. Kitty O’Neil died on 2 November 2018 of pneumonia in Eureka, South Dakota. At the time of her death, she was 72 years old. In 2019, she appeared in the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment.
