Dick Vitale was born Richard John Vitale on June 9, 1939, in Passaic, New Jersey. He was brought up in Garfield, New Jersey. Dick Vitale moved to East Paterson when he was in his high school’s freshman year.
His father (John) worked as a piecework clothing press operator and a security guard (second job). His mother (Mae) served in a factory as a seamstress. His mother sewed coats until she suffered from a stroke.
Dick Vitale studied at East Rutherford High School. He also attended Seton Hall University and completed his graduation with a degree in Business Administration. After that, he attended Paterson State College, where he received a master’s degree in education.
He had his first job at a Garfield, New Jersey elementary school, where he was a coach. He eventually moved up to the high school level. He turned out to be the head coach at Garfield High School for one season.
After that, he also coached at his Alma Mater of East Rutherford High School. Eventually, he led his teams to 2 New Jersey State championships. His record at the school was 131-147 from 1964 to 1971.
Dick Vitale Career, College and NBA Coaching
In the year 1971, Dick Vitale turned out to be an assistant coach at Rutgers University, where he worked under head coach Dick Lloyd. After doing 2 seasons at the school, Dick Vitale was hired to be the head coach at the University of Detroit.
He took that school to the 32-team NCAA tournament in the year 1977. His record with Detroit was 78-30 which included a 21-game winning streak throughout the ’77 season. Dick was promoted to the position of the athletic director of the university following that season.
He graduated to the professional leagues in the year 1978. He coached the NBA’s Detroit Pistons for the ’78-’79, eventually bringing them to a 30-52 record.
But, at the end of 1979 during a rough beginning for the team, Bill Davidson (owner of the Pistons) alerted him that the team made a decision to make a coaching change.
Beginning in Broadcasting
Once he left the position as coach of the Pistons, Dick Vitale was given his first TV gig by Scotty Connal at ESPN network.
He ended up taking the job on the statement that he would do it momentarily until he could land another coaching job. He called ESPN’s first college basketball game along with play-by-play partner Joe Boyle in December 1979.
Continued Broadcasting Success
In the year 1985, ABC bought ESPN. Consequently, he began doing broadcasts for that network. He had covered every televisual game between Duke and the University of North Carolina from 1979-2015. He was calling around forty games a year by the 2004-2005 season.
