When he was just 10 years old, he started performing with his sister in a group known as the Greene Brothers. The Greene family shifted to Grand Rapids, Michigan during the late 1950s.
He was kicked out of the family home during his teenage after his devoutly religious father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. After that, he lived with a prostitute, started hustling, and got involved in recreational drugs.
While attending high school, he formed a vocal group known as the Al Greene & the Creations. Palmer James and Curtis Rodgers (group members) developed an independent label known as Hot Line Music Journal.
In 1968, the name of the group changed to Al Greene & the Soul Mates. On Hot Line Music, the song ‘Back up Train’ was released which got a hit on the R&B Charts and reached #46 in the Cashbox Top 100.
He came into contact with Memphis record producer Willie Mitchell when he was with the Soul Mates. Willie hired him to be a vocalist for a Texas show with his band in 1969. Following the performance, Mitchell asked him to sign with his Hi Records label.
