The early life of Pat Martino

Before Pat could crawl, Carmen Azzara (his father) started the child’s musical education. His father was a tailor by profession, but Carmen had taken guitar lessons from Eddie Lang, who was a jazz pioneer. His father decided his son, Pat Azzara, should play guitar although he was very young.

Pat Martino was just 2 years old when he sneaked into the bedroom of his parents to play the guitar of his father. He was not allowed to touch the guitar. When he was younger, he got his finger cut due to the strings. He got spellbound by the color of his blood. This is how he painted the floorboards and walls with his blood.

After this incident, his father carried on using the ‘reverse psychology’ method by asserting him to stay away from the guitar. When Pat Martino was 11 years old, he got his guitar and started taking lessons. He was too good and his playing progressed at a great pace. He developed most of his technique by the time when Pat was a teenager.

Career details of Pat Martino

When he turned out to be 15 years old, he dropped out of high school. After that, he changed his name to Mickey Martino for his father’s stage name. He went out on tour with Lloyd Price. Pat Martino played with Price on and off for the subsequent 5 years.

He replaced George Benson in the group of Jack McDuff. And the next year when he turned out to be 22 years old, Pat Martino released El Hombre on Prestige Records, which was his debut album.

He started experiencing a series of seizures, which eventually needed psychiatric intervention during the late 1960s. At the time, Martino had been misdiagnosed with manic depression. He did not stop recording and performing. As a result, in 1968, he released East! on Prestige Records.

Pat Martino got his first major label record contract in the 1970s from Warner Bros. Records. After that, he continued to record for Muse Records. He released Joyous Lake and Starbright (both out of print) for Warner Bros. and Muse, Pat Martino did Live! in 1972, Consciousness in 1974, and we’ll Be Together Again in 1976.

Throughout the decade, Pat Martino fought his seizures until 1980 when he experienced a severe seizure in the hospital. After a brain scan, doctors found the source of his health problems as a cluster of blood vessels in his brain that was on the edge of bursting. Doctors told him that Pat Martino had only one more day to live.

This is why he came back to his hometown of Philadelphia and experienced brain surgery immediately. Even though the surgery was a success, he completely lost his memory and it took more than 2 years to get completely recovered.

By 1982, he had returned to performing but put off returning to the recording studio. Lastly, Pat Martino released The Return on Muse Records in 1989. However, disaster struck the musician once again when his mother died in 1989 due to cancer. His father also died the next year.

These incidents made him leave devastated and he suffered from deep depression where he restricted his social contact and drastically decreased his recording schedule. Again, his health deceived him. But then, he got on the track. In 1995, he embarked on his 1st major tour in 1976. He released Open Road. He also received an honor from his hometown at the Mellon PSFS Jazz Festival.

His married life

He got married to Ayaska Asahi Martino in 1997 and Pat Martino died on 1 November, 2021.
