According to Mahabharata, there was a king of the Kuru Dynasty, named Parikshit. He had a son named Janamejeya. His son was performing a Nag or snake sacrifice, which was called Sarpa Satra. He did this thing because he wanted to take revenge for the death of his father as the snake king, Taksaka, had bitten his father.

To perform this revenge, he had made many arrangements. He made a sacrificial fireplace. He had taught Brahmin sages and this is how he began killing all the snakes with these sages. This sacrifice was so powerful. Due to the potent nature of this sacrifice, all snakes were falling in the Yagna Kunda. The snake king, Taksaka got escaped from this and kept itself protected with the help of King Indra.

Brahmins changed their strategy by increasing the rhythm of their mantras so that they could drag and sacrifice King Indra also. This made Taksaka afraid of these mantras and got coiled to Indra. This sacrificing Yagna had too much power, which made Indra dragged into it. Mansa Devi was a goddess of the Hindu religion and all the gods went to Mansa Devi for appeal.

Mansa Devi asked her son named Astika to request Janamejaya to discontinue the Sarpa Satra Yagna. It was not easy to convince Janamejaya. But Astika used many things like his Shastras to impress Janamejaya and he got success in it.

This is how Astika stopped the Janamejaya in his activities. Due to the support of Astika, King Indra and Taksaka were saved. From this day, the festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated. The primary reason is that the life of Nagas was spared on this day.
