Mahashivratri is one of the most special festivals for the devotees of Lord Shiva. In the temples we see big lines of people waiting to visit lord Shiva, to offer him flowers and bathe shiv linga with Chandan and milk. All-day people stand in lines to wait for their turn so that they can offer their offerings. People burn lamps and incense and apply Chandan, leaves, and fruits to Lord Shiva. People also fast on this day and end their fast the next morning.

On the day before people celebrate doing jagrans all around.  People wake up all night singing bhajans and jhankiyan of the marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati. All night long devotees sing and dance. On this day fasting is done to keep our body and mind pure so that we can awake all night and celebrate Mahashivratri. There are many inspirational stories behind Mahashivratri.

This is a story of a hunter and his name was Chitrabhanu. Chitrabhanu was a hunter by nature and he had no idea about Lord Shiva or the fast that is done on Mahashivratri.  He used to kill animals every day and this is how used to live his life. His heart was impure and he had no knowledge of good deeds.

Once he listens to the story of Lord Shiva on the day of Mahashivratri inadvertently. Then he went to the forest to kill animals. When he was in the forest and searching for prey he unknowingly plucked the vine leaves and there was a shiv linga lying beneath the pile of grass on which he threw the vine leaves.

Lord Shiva was pleased with his actions even if it was unknowingly and he blessed Chitrabhanu with a pure heart.  All the violent thoughts inside his mind got immediately destroyed and he became a good man. He quit the life of a hunter and now he saved the lives of six deer.

Lord Shiva is known by many names and his one name is Bhola which means innocent and full of kindness.  No matter how you worship you are going to get blessings of Bhola Baba and this is why devotees show all their love to lord Shiva on the day of Mahashivratri in many ways. Some visit shiv temples which are very far away. Some fast for the whole day. Some people awake all night and worship their god. Lord Shiva is a very powerful god in the Hindu religion. Shiva is known as the destroyer and also the most compassionate god. He is depicted as simple and calm.
