Elisabeth Elliot Early Years

Elisabeth was born on 27 December 1926 in Brussels, Belgium. In Belgium, her parents served as missionaries. She moved from America to Germantown, Pennsylvania, the outer area of Philadelphia before she was a year old. When she with her family came back to America, she had 4 brothers and 1 younger sister with them.

In Germantown, her father worked as the editor for the Sunday School Times, a weekly journal containing Sunday school lessons used simultaneously in many classrooms. She was a true pioneer in the world of Christianity.

Talking about her education, she went to Wheaton College and learned Greek because she wanted to translate the Bible for many remote places in the world. When she was in college, she met Jim Elliot. Once she completed her graduation, she went on a missionary tour to Ecuador with other college students, including Jim Elliot.

Elisabeth and Jim worked in different regions during the first year. A year after joining Ecuador, Jim joined her in the Quichua Indian tribe. They came across as a couple and got married in 1953. After that, they started serving in Ecuador.

A couple had a daughter named Valerie Elliot Shepard. Her husband was killed by the Auca tribe in Eastern Ecuador along with his missionary partners. But Elisabeth never gave up on the people in the tribe.

She lived in the region with her daughter along with Rachel Saint with the Quichua tribe. While living there, she understood why the tribe killed her husband. During this journey, Elisabeth Elliot wrote 2 books, which were all about the experiences she and her husband got with the Auca tribe. The Gates of Splendor is one of the books.

She came to America in 1963 after spending 2 years. She along with her daughter started living in New Hampshire, where she met Addison Leitch, who was a theologian professor at Gordon Conwell University. She was excited to marry him in 1969.

After marriage, they went on a tour to the US with speaking engagements. She never restricted her message to women. Elisabeth was a woman who inspired other Christians to live their lives including men and women along with a passion to live for God.

Addison died of cancer four years after their marriage. When he died, Elisabeth Elliot’s daughter was completely destroyed and unable to bear the loss of his father. After Addison’s death, Elisabeth Elliot had 2 lodgers in her home.

Lars Gren, one lodger, married Elisabeth and another lodger married her daughter. Lars Gren worked as a hospital chaplain. Until her death, the couple was married. When she was 89 years old, she died on June 15, 2015. But today, her legacy still remains in the hearts of people and on earth through her writings and stories.
