He completed his secondary education at Pasig Secondary School, which was later renamed Rizal High School in 1918. After that, he went to the University of the Philippines where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology, and a minor in languages in 1923.

After the first stint teaching French for 3 years, Cecilio Lopez was sent as a government pensionado to Holland, Germany, and France. Afterward, in 1928, Cecilio Lopez completed his doctorate studies, which was major in linguistics with minors in phonetics, and ethnology at the University of Hamburg.

His career history is very interesting to know. He was a unique faculty professor at the University of the Philippines, where he became the department head of Oriental Languages. The position of the department head was given up by him when Cecilio Lopez started working as an executive officer at the Institute of National Language, which was later renamed Surian ng Wikang Pambansa.

Moreover, Cecilio Lopez got the designation of secretary at the UP Graduate School, where he served from 1951 to 1955. He was also a chairman of the Social Science Research Center in 1954. He earned lots of valuable scholarships and contributions. In this recognition, Cecilio Lopez was named Professor Emeritus of Linguistics and Oriental Studies in 1963.

When Kristine Harrington wrote the American Anthropology Journal in 1980, Cecilio Lopez was remembered. Kristine remembered him. Cecilio Lopez is remembered in the Philippines as well as in other abroad countries for his influence and excellence on dynamic teaching, linguistics, and pioneering research on the Indonesian and Philippine languages as well as dialects.

He was also remembered for his valuable role in upholding a national language for the Filipinos. This is the main reason why Cecilio Lopez is still remembered. Cecilio Lopez was a fellow of John Simon Guggenheim in Linguistics at Yale University in Michigan.
