Angie Thomas was born on 20 September 1988 and she is on the list of young and successful authors.  She was born in Mississippi where she grew up with her family. There is not much known about her parents’ names and profession. She has siblings but we are unaware of their names and what they do for a living. 

At a very young age, Angie Thomas was exposed to violence. She had experienced multiple instances of gun violence which had a huge impact on her childhood. Her house was near Medgar Evers who was a civil rights activist who was killed by a gunshot.  Angie’s mother was the one to hear a gunshot fired at Medgar Evers.

Angie Thomas was only six years old when she witnessed killing someone using guns.  Her mother was the one to show her that there is much more than violence in society. The next day Angie’s mother took her to a library and told her daughter that there is more than in this world what her daughter witnessed today.

Her first fear at this point was that nobody is going to be what she writes. When she prepared her first manuscript which turned out to be her first novel called The Hate U Give was her notable work.

When she was in college one of her professor told her that she had a unique sense of writing and she can use her skills to give voice to those whose stories are still hidden and needs a voice.  At this time she was also hearing in the news about the shooting of Oscar Grant.

This story, compounded by the deaths of Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, and Michael Brown was a major influence on her first novel The Hate U Give.  She cited that her inspiration came from Tupac Shakur because she used to flood with different emotions when she used to listen to her music. 

This is why she wanted to have the same effect in her writing. She wanted to make people laugh, cry and think while reading her.

Even the name of her novel was inspired by Tupac’s tattoo Thug Life tattoo which was an acronym for “The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody” Angie Thomas fully understood the meaning of it which was that what society feeds you when you are young has a way of coming back and affects everyone.
